Too Many Ideas

Jan 10, 2013 by

You want to get your story written but a dozen other ideas keep popping up and getting in your way. It happens to me on a daily basis and I’m still learning how to deal with it but I have a few tips that can help.

When plot bunnies strike write your idea down as fast as you can; I’ve found that the longer you leave them floating around in your head the longer you have to dwell on it and soon one idea’s become five. So file it away and let it go.

When too many other stories start crowding your brain try listening to music, finding pictures or watching a movie that makes you think of your story. It could help put you back in the mood to write it and might even spark some inspiration.

But when inspiration comes write it down whether it’s for the story your focusing on or not. Good ideas shouldn’t be forgotten no matter what they’re for. What you don’t do though is stress out over a problem you’re having in a story that isn’t the one your supposed to be writing. I don’t know how many times I’ve caught myself doing that; sometimes it’s hard to let it go but you just have to remind yourself that by the time you get to that story the problem might have sorted it’s self anyway. And you could always put the problem in a file to worry about when you need to.

Which brings me to my favorite tip… files! I’ve got countless notepads of story files, character files, quote files, outline files. The reason is cause they help me keep all my ideas organized, and when I have a new idea I can put it in a file and not have to worry about forgetting it.

Now I’m no expert on this, (as I’m writing this I’m also working on the end to a story I’ve barely even started on) but these tips have seemed to help me. If anyone else has any tips they’re willing to share I’d love to hear them. 🙂
